President Joe Biden addressed the increased reports of drone sightings in East Coast states, stating that there was no cause for alarm while acknowledging the need to monitor the situation closely. Authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, have reassured the public that the sightings do not pose a national security or public safety risk. The sightings have prompted demands for more information from politicians and officials, including President-elect Donald Trump and Governor Kathy Hochul of New York.
More than a million drones are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, and authorities have received over 5,000 tips related to the sightings. The objects identified include commercial, hobbyist, and law enforcement drones, as well as crewed aircraft. Intelligence officials briefed the House Intelligence Committee on the issue and emphasized that the drones are not being used unlawfully or with malicious intent.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has called for legislation to provide government entities with better authorities to address the growing number of drones entering U.S. airspace. A provision in a funding bill released on Tuesday would reauthorize a Department of Homeland Security program to allow coordination and permitting federal agencies to counter drone threats. The goal is to ensure the safety and security of the public while addressing concerns and conspiracy theories surrounding the drone sightings.
