Two companies, Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy, have teamed up to address the pollution caused by plastic production. Instead of recycling, they are focused on creating cleaner plastic by developing plant-based chemicals that reduce the industry’s reliance on oil and gas, with a focus on using hemp. SGP’s Ready.Grow program aims to work with farmers to cultivate sustainable materials, with industrial hemp as a key component. This partnership is part of Honeywell’s energy transition strategy to produce petrochemical alternatives using second-generation feedstocks. The goal is to reduce global reliance on fossil fuels and combat the significant carbon pollution attributed to plastic production.
Honeywell’s Chief Technology and Growth Officer, Bryan Glover, highlights the importance of using non-edible feedstocks like hemp to avoid impacting the food chain. SGP BioEnergy’s CEO, Randy Delbert Letang, emphasizes the growing global demand for cleaner solutions and the need for policies to incentivize sustainable practices. The collaboration between these companies is part of a larger movement towards transformative advancements in biochemicals and biomass that are shaping a cleaner, cooler future. This initiative aims to combat the projected increase in carbon pollution from plastic production and offers a promising solution to reduce the environmental impact of the industry.
