New Mexico Black Leadership Council condemns racist text messages sent

The New Mexico Black Leadership Council has reported that at least two Black individuals in Albuquerque, including City Councilor Nichole Rogers, have received racist text messages following last month’s election. The messages included references to cotton plantations, shocking many in the community. The FBI is aware of the incidents and is working with partners to combat hate in the community. In response to these events, the NMBLC and over 30 other groups published an open letter denouncing hate and promoting values of fairness, justice, and respect. The organization is urging anyone who receives such messages to report them to law enforcement or the FBI. NMBLC is also offering additional support services to those affected. Marcus Porter, Chief Programs and Policy Officer for NMBLC, hopes that by shedding light on these incidents, it will help deter such behavior in the future. This disturbing trend serves as a reminder that hate crimes affect everyone and should not be tolerated in any community.
