Recent wastewater analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified New Mexico as one of four states with a very high level of COVID-19. Since September 2020, the CDC has been testing wastewater to monitor infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Srikanth Paladugu, bureau chief for New Mexico’s Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau, stated that COVID-19 levels in the state have been increasing since November. However, Chief Medical Officer Miranda Durham emphasized that the current levels are not as severe as during the peak of the pandemic. While New Mexico is experiencing a winter bump in cases, it is not considered a pandemic-level crisis. Durham encouraged residents to get vaccinated for both the flu and COVID-19, regardless of insurance status, and recommended contacting the Department of Health helpline for assistance. Overall, while New Mexico is seeing a higher prevalence of COVID-19 in its wastewater, state officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
