Penn State’s Health Promotion and Wellness department recently held a Vibe Out/Mindful Making: Pottery Painting event for students, giving them the opportunity to get creative and destress during the final exam week. Each student received a blank mug to paint with colorful glazes, led by Student Wellness Specialist Madison Cooper and Student Art Engagement Manager Deanna Nagle.
Cooper highlighted the importance of mindfulness in such activities, using art and music as a form of relaxation and self-expression. Mandi Gatto, an administrative support assistant at the Center for Arts and Crafts, brought pottery-making to the event, offering students a chance to engage in various art activities.
Participants Nyika Wachira and Julia Ebwelleson found inspiration in the event through their involvement in the Multicultural Engineering Program. Wachira aimed for a graffiti art style, while Ebwelleson planned to paint a tropical-themed mug with hibiscus flowers.
Both students found the creative outlet to be a way to break away from the stress of studying and exams. Students interested in mindfulness art activities can attend the last Vibe Out event of the semester, Bracelet Making, at the HUB on Thursday.
Overall, the event provided students with a fun and engaging experience, allowing them to express themselves creatively and take a break from academic pressures. Such activities are essential for promoting mental well-being and self-care among college students.
