Pennsylvania authorities have arrested Luigi Mangione, a person of interest in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was found in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, carrying multiple fake IDs. It is suspected that he traveled there by bus from Philadelphia. He was charged with various offenses including carrying firearms without a license and forgery. Mangione, a computer science graduate, had a significant online presence, including Goodreads, where he reviewed books and expressed some extreme views.
Investigators found a three-page document that shed light on his motivation and mindset, as well as a ghost gun that may have been made on a 3D printer. Mangione appeared to endorse conservative-leaning thinkers and expressed concerns about modern society’s failings. He was also interested in Japanese culture and shared ideas to increase the birth rate in Japan.
Meanwhile, police in New York continued to investigate Thompson’s death, which was described as a premeditated, targeted attack. The shooter approached Thompson from behind and shot him before fleeing on foot and then on a bike into Central Park. The investigation into both cases remains ongoing.
