Clovis police are searching for a suspected killer, Alex Zapata, who was mistakenly released from state custody in October. Zapata is accused of murder in connection with the July 2023 robbery and slaying of Anibal Salguero in Clovis. Despite having a warrant out for his arrest, Zapata was not located during a recent domestic disturbance call. Zapata was released from custody for reasons that are not immediately clear, after serving time for a parole violation in an unrelated crime. Another man, Cordney Cooper, is also charged with murder in connection with the same incident.
Police are urging the public to provide any information on Zapata’s whereabouts. Anyone with information is asked to call Clovis police at 575-769-1921 or provide anonymous tips to the Curry County Crime Stoppers at 575-763-7000. The incident has raised concerns about the justice system’s handling of Zapata’s case and the need for measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future.
