Legislative Agenda: What to Expect in the Upcoming Session

Interim Legislative Session in Full Swing as New Mexico Lawmakers Prepare for 2025 Regular Session

As the election season has come to a close, lawmakers in New Mexico are gearing up for the 2025 Legislative Session set to begin in January. With interim committee meetings already underway, legislators are beginning to prefile legislation in preparation for the upcoming session.

Key topics on the agenda include affirmative consent, budget and appropriations negotiations, and efforts to enhance benefits for veterans and public servants. U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury introduced the Veteran Benefits Enhancement Act, aiming to clarify treatment of military retirement pay related to unemployment and sick benefits. Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez voted in favor of the Social Security Fairness Act to strengthen benefits for public servants.

Senator Martin Heinrich cosponsored the Tax Relief for New Businesses Act to provide more tax relief to entrepreneurs looking to start small businesses. Additionally, a bipartisan group of legislators reintroduced the Improving Diagnosis in Medicine Act to address medical diagnostic errors.
