The Republican Party of New Mexico recently elected Otero County Commissioner Amy Barela as their new chair. Barela, who previously served as the party’s 1st vice-chair, won the election at the party’s Biennial Convention in Truth or Consequences. Barela, 49, emerged as the winner in a five-way race for the leadership position. She vowed to excite the base, work on policy changes, and unite the party to fight for all New Mexicans.
Barela will be succeeding Steve Pearce, who decided not to seek a fourth term. Pearce, a seasoned political figure in New Mexico, served as party chair for six years. He highlighted his commitment to advocating for Republican values and touted the progress made in expanding the party’s reach to include Hispanics, Native Americans, women, and young people.
Despite facing defeats in recent elections, Pearce believes the groundwork has been laid for a resurgent Republican Party in New Mexico. He emphasized building a stable team and fundraising operation, as well as investing in voter outreach efforts. The party has seen an increase in newly registered Republicans and “decline to states,” indicating a shift in the state’s political landscape.
Barela’s election comes as the party prepares for county elections in January, education for new party officers, and municipal elections. The primary focus will be on recruiting candidates and strengthening the party’s capacities ahead of the 2026 elections. With a renewed vision and commitment to unity, Barela aims to position the Republican Party of New Mexico for success in the future.
