St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico is now offering free tuition to students from families earning $75,000 or less. This initiative is part of the college’s “Freeing Minds” campaign, which has raised over $326 million since 2018. To qualify for free tuition, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, submit the FAFSA, and demonstrate a total income of $75,000 or less with “typical assets.” The college will provide institutional and federal grants to cover freshman year tuition, with continued assistance in subsequent years if the income or assets don’t change. Students may also receive grants, loans, and work-study opportunities for housing and food costs. This policy will take effect for incoming students starting in spring 2025, allowing local New Mexico students the opportunity to attend college close to home without the burden of tuition fees. St. John’s College hopes this initiative will make higher education more accessible and affordable for low-income families in the region.
