Digital IDs are now accepted in New Mexico

New Mexico residents can now carry and use virtual driver’s licenses on their smartphones, following the passage of Senate Bill 88 earlier this year. However, the digital ID cannot be used at airport security checkpoints yet, and businesses may take a while to adopt the technology for age verification purposes. The process for getting a digital ID involves submitting photos of the physical card and the ID-holder’s face to the Motor Vehicle Department. The New Mexico Restaurant Association plans to educate businesses and the public on the new digital ID system, which allows for the purchase of age-restricted items like alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco. The state has released a verification app, NM Verifier, for businesses to read digital IDs. While the federal Transportation Security Administration allows digital IDs at security checkpoints in some states, New Mexico airports do not yet have the technology installed. The state has announced that digital IDs will soon be accepted at the Albuquerque Sunport and Lea County Regional Airport.
