New Mexico Democrats maintain control despite Republican gains

Democrats in New Mexico maintained their political control over the state with the re-election of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich and Congressman Gabe Vasquez in a House swing district. However, the support for President-elect Donald Trump expanded as Republicans captured more legislative seats, indicating a shift in voter sentiments.

While Democratic presidential candidates have historically won in New Mexico, Trump’s performance in the state improved, cutting into his previous deficits. Trump gained support in both traditionally Democratic and Republican counties in the state, with Vice President Kamala Harris winning in only 13 counties.

The shift towards voting for Trump was particularly evident in Democratic strongholds along the Rio Grande corridor. Republican legislative candidates also made gains, picking up seats in both the state House and Senate, preventing a Democratic supermajority. Notably, Republicans won control of a state Senate seat and a House seat previously held by Democrats.

Despite these gains, Democrats still maintain control over every statewide office in New Mexico, all three U.S. House seats, and the state Supreme Court. Heinrich and Vasquez both secured reelection, with Vasquez winning a close-fought rematch in the swing district.

The results of the election in New Mexico reflect a changing political landscape in the state, with Republicans making significant gains, but Democrats still holding key positions of power in the state.
