President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he had pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing sentencing in two federal cases for federal gun charges and federal tax evasion. The president had previously stated that he would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, but he changed his mind after observing what he believed to be unfair and selective prosecution of his son. Biden explained that the charges against Hunter were instigated by his political opponents in Congress and that his son was being treated differently than others in similar circumstances. The president emphasized that he believes in the justice system, but that politics had infected the process in Hunter’s cases, resulting in a miscarriage of justice. In light of these factors, Biden decided to grant a full and unconditional pardon to his son for any offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024, including those charged or prosecuted by Special Counsel David C. Weiss. The pardon was signed and recorded with the Department of Justice on December 1, 2024. Biden expressed hope that the American people would understand his decision as both a father and a president.
