Don Bustos, owner of Santa Cruz Farm in New Mexico, is blending traditional farming practices with modern advancements to provide fresh produce to local communities. The 4.5-acre farm, in the family for over 400 years, relies on solar energy and ancient irrigation methods to grow a variety of crops year-round without the use of major chemicals or pesticides.
Bustos, who has been farming organically for over 20 years, is known for his traditional crops like corn and green chili, as well as specialty crops like the Triple Crown Blackberry. Through collaborations with New Mexico State University, Bustos has been able to enhance his farming techniques and improve his financial management skills to make the farm more profitable.
Despite not aiming to revolutionize agriculture, Bustos is dedicated to feeding his community while preserving family traditions and ancestral practices. With a focus on health and sustainability, Santa Cruz Farm continues to thrive under his innovative and community-focused leadership.
