Police say Colorado dentist tried to kill detective with poisoned protein shakes meant for wife

New charges have been filed against Colorado dentist James Craig, who was previously accused of fatally poisoning his wife. These new charges focus on alleged attempts by Craig to kill a detective involved in the case, including solicitation to commit first-degree murder and solicitation to commit perjury. Craig’s lawyer withdrew from the case just before the new charges were filed, and it is unclear if he has a new attorney. The detective targeted in the alleged murder plot had worked on the investigation into Angela Craig’s death.

Authorities previously accused James Craig of poisoning his wife’s protein shakes with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, leading to her death. Investigators initially believed arsenic was involved, but the autopsy revealed a combination of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline. Evidence against Craig includes internet search history showing an interest in detecting arsenic in autopsies and online purchases of potassium cyanide, delivered to his dental practice.

The case took a turn when Craig’s business partner flagged the purchase of cyanide as suspicious, leading to authorities being contacted. The partner confronted Craig, who initially denied buying the cyanide but later claimed his wife requested it. Despite this, Craig’s defense lawyer maintained there was no direct evidence linking him to his wife’s poisoning.

The lawyer later withdrew from the case, citing concerns about Craig’s actions. Jury selection for Craig’s trial was postponed indefinitely, and the case continues to develop as authorities investigate his alleged attempts to harm the detective involved in the case.
