Arizona State University’s men’s basketball team showcased a balance of young talent and veteran leadership in their 85-82 victory over New Mexico in the Acrisure Classic on Thanksgiving. While star freshmen like Jayden Quaintance and Joson Sanon made significant contributions, it was experienced transfers Basheer Jihad, BJ Freeman, and Alston Mason who ultimately sealed the deal for the Sun Devils.
Jihad and Freeman hit crucial back-to-back 3-pointers late in the game, with Mason sinking key free throws to secure the win. Coach Bobby Hurley commended his team’s resilience and grit, highlighting their ability to come back from a nine-point deficit in the second half.
Despite a strong start from ASU, New Mexico mounted a comeback towards the end of the first half, taking the lead before halftime. Led by Donovan Dent and Mustapha Amzil, the Lobos continued to pressure the Sun Devils in the second half.
However, ASU’s defense stepped up, holding New Mexico to just 1-for-11 shooting during a critical stretch. Quaintance and Sanon were instrumental in the team’s defensive efforts, with Sanon’s mature playmaking skills standing out.
With the win, ASU extends their streak of scoring at least 80 points in six consecutive games. They now prepare to face St. Mary’s in their next matchup, following the Gaels’ impressive victory over USC in the Acrisure Classic. Fans can catch the game on truTV or listen on 98.7 FM and the Arizona Sports app.
