Acequias in New Mexico prioritize legislative goals for 2025

Local governments in New Mexico are seeking significant funding to maintain and rebuild centuries-old community ditches called acequias after recent disasters. The New Mexico Acequia Commission and the New Mexico Acequia Association are asking state lawmakers for tens of millions of dollars to support over 700 acequias across the state that help communities and families with irrigation. With a rapidly changing climate and increasing disasters, traditional practices are at risk, requiring more resources for infrastructure improvements.

The grassroots Acequia Association estimates that acequias will need around $68 million in the coming decades for maintenance and improvements. They are urging lawmakers to provide additional funding for infrastructure repairs and disaster assistance, including increasing the Acequia and Community Ditch Infrastructure Fund. Without proper funding, communities face challenges in maintaining these essential water systems that support small farming and ranching operations. The legislation priorities also include settling water rights disputes and supporting community education and governance. The push for increased funding highlights the need to protect these ancient water management systems that are at the heart of New Mexico’s agricultural heritage.
