Gonzaga women’s basketball team heads to New Mexico on Sunday with high expectations for Yvonne Ejim, who is close to breaking the all-time scoring record. The team, led by Head Coach Lisa Fortier, has been shooting well from beyond the arc and dominating on the boards this season. Freshman Allie Turner has been impressive, leading in three-pointers made and scoring among freshmen nationally.
Last season, the Bulldogs made history by advancing to the Sweet 16 for the fifth time, with Ejim earning multiple accolades for her performance on the court. The team was picked to finish first in the West Coast Conference this season, with Ejim and Maud Huijbens named to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
New Mexico will be a tough opponent, with a string of wins in the past few games. Viané Cumber has been a standout player for the Lobos, scoring in double figures in all five games this season. The Lobos have been creating steals and sharing the scoring load among multiple players.
Ejim has also made a mark off the court, becoming the first Academic All-American in women’s basketball history and representing Canada in the Olympics. With Ejim’s impressive career statistics and potential to make history, Gonzaga’s game against New Mexico promises to be an electrifying matchup.
