Trump claims Mexico will halt the influx of illegal immigrants

President-elect Trump recently had a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, in which they discussed stopping migration through Mexico into the United States. Trump had threatened Mexico with 25% tariffs if they did not do more to stem the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. Sheinbaum, who recently took office, stated that Mexico would retaliate if the tariffs were imposed. Trump claimed that Sheinbaum agreed to stop migration and prevent people from going to the U.S. southern border. Trump also threatened an additional 10% tariff on China due to the influx of fentanyl into the U.S. from Mexico.

Sheinbaum stated that Mexico’s strategy is to assist migrants and caravans before they reach the border, rather than closing borders. Trump and Sheinbaum also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues. Trump plans to launch a large-scale ad campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has caused many overdose deaths in the U.S.

In a statement, the China Daily newspaper criticized Trump’s threat of additional tariffs on Chinese imports, calling the excuse for the tariffs far-fetched. Trump’s discussions with Sheinbaum and plans for border security and drug prevention measures come amid ongoing tensions over immigration and drug trafficking at the U.S.-Mexico border.
