President-elect Donald Trump has selected businessman and investor John Phelan, without any military experience, to become the next secretary of the Navy. Phelan, if confirmed, would be the first Navy secretary in 15 years without prior military service. Trump praised Phelan’s success in various endeavors, highlighting his leadership and intelligence. Phelan would oversee a large budget and personnel as the 79th Navy secretary. The majority of previous Navy secretaries have had military experience, with Phelan being an exception. His predecessor, Carlos Del Toro, had over 20 years of service in the Navy. Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, as secretary of defense, contrasts Phelan’s lack of military background. Hegseth has a background in the Army National Guard and has served in various locations including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantánamo Bay. These nominations reflect Trump’s vision of prioritizing the U.S. Navy’s business interests and advancing his “America First” agenda.
