The prosecution of Andrew Lester, an 86-year-old white man charged in the wrong-door injury shooting of a Black teenager in Kansas City, Missouri, will continue as scheduled on Feb. 18. Lester, a retired aircraft mechanic, pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action charges after shooting then-16-year-old Ralph Yarl on April 13. Yarl, who survived with injuries to his head and arm, went to Lester’s door by mistake while trying to pick up his younger twin brothers. Lester claimed he shot out of fear, and turned himself in days later amid public outcry over the incident.
The trial has been moving forward despite concerns raised by Lester’s defense about potential jury bias due to the publicity surrounding the case, which has garnered attention from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, and Kim Kardashian. Yarl’s family is grateful that justice is being pursued, as the case represents more than just accountability for Lester’s actions.
If convicted of the assault charge, Lester could face life in prison, while the armed criminal action charge carries a potential sentence of 3 to 15 years. Yarl has expressed ongoing trauma from the incident, and his family remains committed to seeking fairness in the justice system to prevent others from experiencing similar pain based on their skin color. The trial is scheduled for Feb. 18, with a possible second week set for Feb. 24 if needed.
