Hesai Group, the world’s largest maker of lidar sensors, is experiencing rapid growth despite geopolitical challenges, says CEO David Li. The company’s shares surged 44% after reporting a 21% increase in third-quarter revenue to $76.9 million. Hesai commands 37% of the global lidar market and expects further growth, with shipments expected to reach 1 million units by 2025. Lidar technology is crucial for autonomous vehicles, enhancing safety by scanning roads for issues and activating safety measures. While Tesla’s Elon Musk has doubted lidar, many in the industry see its potential for improving autonomous driving safety. Hesai is also facing challenges from being placed on a US blacklist for alleged ties to the Chinese military, despite claims of no connection to the military and no data transfer capabilities in the sensors. The company is taking legal action against the Pentagon over the decision. Despite these challenges, Hesai remains optimistic about the future of lidar technology and its role in advancing autonomous driving.
