An appeals court has agreed to dismiss charges against Donald Trump related to mishandling classified documents, effectively ending Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of the former president. The charges included allegations of retaining national defense information and directing the deletion of security video at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The special counsel’s office also sought to dismiss charges against Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which was granted by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan. Another case involving hush money payments in New York and a Georgia election interference case are still pending. Trump’s attorneys have argued for presidential immunity in the New York case, where he was found guilty of falsifying business records, and the sentencing has been postponed. The Georgia case has been held up over conflict of interest allegations against the district attorney. Trump has continued to assert that the prosecutions by Smith were politically motivated and has pleaded not guilty in both cases. He called the cases “empty and lawless” and claimed they were a “political hijacking.” Trump’s attorneys have also argued that the cases should never have been brought. Despite the dismissals and pending cases, Trump remains defiant and insists that he has prevailed against the odds.
