Daniel Jones released by Giants

The New York Giants are releasing quarterback Daniel Jones after a disappointing six-season run that resulted in just one playoff appearance. Jones, who was recently benched and demoted to fourth-string, requested his release from the team. Giants president John Mara praised Jones as a great representative but expressed disappointment in the team’s performance. Jones acknowledged the business aspect of football in a media address, noting the team’s lack of results. With a 24-45-1 record as a starting quarterback, it was likely that Jones would not be part of the team in the offseason. Selected sixth overall in 2019, Jones had signed a large contract extension after leading the team to the playoffs in his best season. However, he struggled with injuries last year, culminating in a torn ACL that ended his season. At 27 years old, Jones will be facing an offseason move as the team looks to free up salary cap space. The Giants, with a 2-8 record this season, are expected to draft a new quarterback next year.
