Celebrities’ Attempts to Escape Trump’s America Highlight Their Privilege and Hypocrisy

Many media darlings have announced their intent to leave the United States due to a Republican-dominated government, with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi choosing to move to the UK. However, the process to move to another country is not as easy as it seems, especially for regular people with real jobs. In the UK, paths to citizenship include being born to British parents or marrying a British citizen, neither of which applies to Ellen and Portia. Work visas also require sponsorship by an employer, which is unlikely for mere celebrities and actors.

However, there is a visa option called the Global Talent Visa, which allows highly skilled individuals to relocate to the UK based on merit and professional background without employer sponsorship. This seems to cater specifically to rich and famous celebrities. Similar visas, such as the Self Employed visa in Canada and the Golden Visa in Spain, exist in other countries, offering paths to residency through investments or donations.

While some celebrities claim to be leaving the US due to oppression and inequality, their ability to move to another country is solely due to the success they have had in America. The act of leaving can be seen as a privileged, elitist temper tantrum rather than a noble protest. Moving away from the United States is not an option available to most citizens, highlighting the stark contrast between the experiences of regular people and wealthy celebrities.
