New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver is facing harassment and threats on social media after affirming President-elect Donald Trump’s national election victory to combat conspiracy theories. Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, mentioned experiencing threats, even from members of a legislative committee, and plans to contact law enforcement. A state law makes it a felony to intimidate state or local election officials. She shut down her public social media account after being accused of treason and being targeted with violent threats. Toulouse Oliver accused Republican state Rep. John Block of fueling anger online, although he apologized for the harassment. Toulouse Oliver also advocated for increased security measures to protect the confidentiality of state and local election workers’ home addresses. Despite Trump’s loss in New Mexico, Democratic candidates were successful in winning key congressional and legislative races. The state saw over 52,000 people use same-day registration to vote in the recent election.
