U.S. closes Kyiv embassy due to threat of ‘major air attack’

The United States has closed its embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, after receiving specific information about a potential significant air attack. Embassy employees have been instructed to shelter in place, and U.S. citizens are advised to take shelter if an air alert is announced. This closure is not unprecedented as the war between Ukraine and Russia reached its 1,000th day on Tuesday. Kyiv came under attack by Russian drones early Wednesday, resulting in a fire in a residential building and causing casualties. More than a dozen people have been killed in Russian aerial attacks, which have targeted energy infrastructure and caused widespread blackouts across Ukraine. In response to Ukraine’s first strike on Russian territory with U.S.-supplied long-range weapons, the Kremlin has revised its nuclear doctrine to lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons. Putin stated that Moscow could justify a nuclear strike if attacked by a nonnuclear country supported by a nuclear country. This development has raised tensions in the region and underscores the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
