Press Release: Hobbs Police Investigate Weekend Shooting Incident
HOBBS, New Mexico (KMID/KPEJ) – The Hobbs Police Department is actively investigating a shooting incident that left two individuals injured early Sunday morning, November 17. Officers responded at approximately 3:24 AM to the intersection of Marland Boulevard and Leech Street, where they discovered 22-year-old Isaiah Chavez-Wright suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Texas for further treatment.
As police attended to Chavez-Wright, they received reports of another person potentially injured. Officers were dispatched to Harden Street and Thorp Street, where a vehicle had crashed into a utility pole. They encountered the driver, 29-year-old Devin Sanders, who also had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Like Chavez-Wright, Sanders was taken to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital and later flown to a Texas facility for treatment.
Following a thorough investigation, authorities issued a warrant on Tuesday, November 19, for 33-year-old Devarian Gibson of Hobbs, who was arrested and faces charges of Aggravated Battery, a third-degree felony, and Shooting At or From a Motor Vehicle, a second-degree felony. As of Tuesday evening, Sanders remains in serious condition while Chavez-Wright is reported to be stable.
