Mexico Native Sentenced to 11 Years for Firearm and Drug Charges

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Mario Figueroa-Camarillo, a 40-year-old native of Mexico, has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison following his arrest in December 2022 on multiple charges, including firearm and drug possession.

Figueroa-Camarillo’s arrest occurred when New Mexico State Police stopped a stolen vehicle in Albuquerque. The vehicle had been reported stolen by Los Lunas police a month prior. During the incident, authorities discovered Figueroa-Camarillo in possession of two cell phones, nearly $1,800 in cash, and a loaded handgun magazine. Notably, he was also wearing a GPS ankle monitor as part of a pretrial release condition from an unrelated case.

A subsequent search of the stolen vehicle revealed a stash of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and a loaded handgun, significantly escalating the severity of the charges against him.

The sentencing was announced by Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman alongside U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez, highlighting the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in combating drug and firearm-related crimes in the community. Following the completion of his prison term, Figueroa-Camarillo will face deportation proceedings, emphasizing the legal repercussions he will likely experience beyond his federal sentence.

The case underscores ongoing challenges related to drug trafficking and firearm offenses, prompting officials to address these issues rigorously in order to maintain public safety.
