Heroic Dog Survives Drive-By Shooting, Inspires Community Support in Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A loyal dog named Halo displayed extraordinary bravery during a recent drive-by shooting, risking her life to protect her owners, Brittany McAfee and Ayana Green. The incident unfolded when the couple was awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of shattering glass, only to find themselves caught in the crossfire. Remarkably, Halo jumped onto the bed to shield her owners and was struck by a bullet.
During the chaos, McAfee suffered injury and immediately sought medical attention, while Green rushed Halo to an emergency veterinarian. "Even while Brittany was shot and hurt, she said to me, ‘You save my dog,’” recalled Green. The vets managed to stabilize Halo, but she required additional surgery for her broken bone, incurring significant medical costs.
Halo’s inspiring story quickly went viral, prompting Abby Norris, the donor engagement manager at Animal Humane New Mexico, to launch a fundraiser to help cover the expenses. Within days, the campaign raised over $6,000, offering crucial support for Halo’s surgeries and ongoing medical care.
“Once I heard about it, I was like, ‘I have to fundraise for this dog,’” Norris said, emphasizing the need to support both the dog and her family in their time of distress. The funds raised will go to Animal Humane’s Miracle Medical Fund, earmarked for emergencies like this one.
With ongoing community support, McAfee and Green expressed their gratitude for the assistance they received. “In a blink of an eye, I probably could have lost both of them, so I’m very grateful that they’re both still here,” they said, highlighting the unbreakable bond between humans and their heroic pets. Efforts to raise additional funds for Halo’s care continue.
