Women’s Basketball: Dominant Defense Leads to Lopsided Victory Over Western New Mexico

Lobos Dominate Mustangs with Defensive Brilliance in 85-56 Victory

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico Lobos showcased an impressive defensive display in their commanding 85-56 win over the Western New Mexico University Mustangs on Friday, November 15. The Lobos’ defense was the cornerstone of their triumph, accumulating 13 steals and six blocks throughout the game.

Head Coach Mike Bradbury expressed his satisfaction with the team’s defensive efforts, stating, “We were good in transition, and it was good to see. It led to some easy baskets.” Although the Lobos struggled offensively in the first quarter with a shooting percentage of just 36% and 25% from three-point range, their defense proved effective, allowing them to maintain a 7-point lead by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lobos ramped up their defense, forcing numerous turnovers and converting them into quick transition points. Their offensive rhythm improved dramatically, shooting 60% in this quarter and entering halftime with an 18-point advantage.

The third quarter saw the Lobos maintain their lead, with strong offensive play keeping the Mustangs at bay. As the final quarter began, the Lobos’ defense reasserted itself, further stifling the Mustangs’ efforts on the court.

Several standout performances contributed to the victory, with four Lobos scoring in double figures: Hulda Joaquim, Destinee Hooks, Alyssa Hargrove, and Vianè Cumber. Notably, Hargrove’s defensive prowess included four steals and a block, as she emphasized the importance of defense in motivating the team.

With this win, the Lobos improved their season record to 2-2. They prepare for their next challenge against South Carolina State University at The Pit on November 20. Coach Bradbury acknowledged the upcoming tough competition, remarking, “All these teams were picked to win their league, so we’re going to have to be really good to be competitive in all of them.”
