Los Alamos Councillor Urged to Consider Existing Telecommunications Infrastructure for Broadband Network
Los Alamos, NM – In a recent communication addressed to local councillors, resident Andrew Fraser expressed strong support for the approval of two Community Broadband Network (CBN) contracts slated for discussion at the upcoming council meeting on November 19. Fraser underscored the importance of integrating existing privately owned telecommunications assets into the CBN framework to expedite network development and avoid unnecessary duplication of infrastructure.
Fraser highlighted that Exhibit A of the contract, which includes a fiber inventory map, reflects only county-owned assets. He emphasized that several private companies, such as Comcast and LA-Net, already possess conduits within the county that could be beneficial for establishing the CBN. He urged the county and Bonfire, the consulting firm involved, to consider purchasing these assets if fair prices can be negotiated.
"As someone who has utilized various ISPs in Los Alamos, including Xfinity and LA-Net, I can vouch for the quality of service and responsiveness these companies provide," noted Fraser, mentioning his personal experiences with LA-Net while operating a local business. He believes that collaboration with these providers would result in a more robust and efficient broadband network for the community.
Fraser’s letter advocates for proactive measures by the council to investigate the feasibility of acquiring existing infrastructure, thereby facilitating a more timely rollout of the CBN. He implored councillors to press county staff on this issue during their meeting, reinforcing that leveraging existing assets would ultimately benefit local residents and businesses. As the council convenes, the community eagerly awaits their decision on the broadband proposals and potential partnerships aimed at enhancing connectivity in Los Alamos.
