Chinese President Xi Jinping met with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump to discuss key conflicts such as cyber crime, trade, Taiwan, and Russia. Xi expressed China’s willingness to maintain a stable relationship with the new U.S. administration and work together to manage differences. Biden emphasized the importance of frank and candid discussions between the two countries.
Trump, who plans to implement tariffs on Chinese goods and hire officials with hawkish views on China, poses challenges to the relationship between the two countries. Biden aims to lower tensions with China, but recent cyber attacks linked to China and increasing pressure on Taiwan are sources of concern for the U.S. China considers Taiwan its own territory, while the U.S. is Taiwan’s key supporter.
Biden also seeks China’s help with North Korea amidst its ties with Russia and deployment in Ukraine. Economic issues, including trade restrictions and investment limitations, are expected to be topics of discussion between the two leaders. Xi’s diplomatic tour in Latin America, including renegotiating trade agreements and opening a deep-water port, signals China’s expanding influence in the region.
The U.S. is concerned about China’s military and intelligence activities in Latin America. Despite the challenges, Xi is expected to receive a warm reception in the region. The U.S. remains committed to its relationships in Latin America, while trying to address the perception of a hostile business environment in China to encourage American investment.
