SANTA FE – The New Mexico Senate Democratic Caucus convened on Saturday to nominate key leadership positions for the upcoming legislative session, electing representatives for Senate President Pro Tempore, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip, and Senate Majority Caucus Chair.

Senator Mimi Stewart (D-Albuquerque) has been nominated for Senate President Pro Tempore, with the official election set for January when the full Senate convenes. “I am honored to have the support of our diverse new Democratic Caucus as we enter what will undoubtedly be a tough but productive session,” Stewart stated, expressing confidence in bipartisan collaboration for the welfare of New Mexicans.

Senator Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe) was re-elected as the Democratic Majority Leader for the 57th Legislature, continuing a role he has held since 2017. He expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the unity within the Democratic Senate. “We are ready to work with the House and Governor to deliver solutions to the many challenges facing the state,” Wirth remarked.

Senator Michael Padilla (D-Albuquerque) was re-elected as the Senate Majority Whip, thanking his colleagues for their continued confidence in him. “I pledge to work with every member of our caucus as we continue our commitment to uplifting the lives of every New Mexican,” Padilla said.

Senator Leo Jaramillo (D-Española) was elected as the Senate Majority Caucus Chair, expressing excitement to contribute to the leadership team and positively impact communities across New Mexico.

The 57th Legislative Session begins on January 21, 2025, and will span 60 days, allowing for a wide range of bills to be introduced without restrictions on subject matter.
