Officials say Russia launches ‘massive’ missile strike on Ukraine’s power grid

Multiple cities in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, were hit by a major missile attack by Russia. The attack targeted power facilities, causing widespread destruction and cutting off power to various districts. Air defenses engaged drones over the capital as powerful blasts were heard across the city. In Mykolaiv, two people were killed in an overnight drone attack, while other cities like Zaporizhzhia and Odesa also experienced explosions. The attack was described as one of the largest air attacks, with drones, missiles, and hypersonic weapons targeting peaceful cities and critical infrastructure.

Ukraine’s Energy Minister confirmed the ongoing attack on electricity generation and transmission facilities, leading to fears of long blackouts and psychological pressure amid the ongoing war with Russia. The scale of damage was not immediately clear, with reports of damage to energy infrastructure in various regions. Ukrainian air force urged residents to take cover as Russian cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles were launched. NATO member Poland scrambled its air force as a security precaution due to the Russian attack using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones.

The attack was seen as Russia’s response to Western leaders interacting with President Vladimir Putin, with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister describing it as Moscow’s true response. The situation remains tense as the conflict escalates, with ongoing threats to civilians and critical infrastructure. Emergency services were dispatched to respond to incidents such as fires caused by falling debris. The attack marks one of the biggest missile strikes since August when a similar attack killed seven people.
