Washington State Cougars Suffer Shock Loss to New Mexico Lobos, Playoff Hopes Dim
In a disheartening turn of events for the Washington State Cougars, their aspirations for the College Football Playoff were dashed in a thrilling game against the New Mexico Lobos, who emerged victorious 38-35 at University Stadium in Albuquerque on Saturday.
The Cougars (8-2) appeared to be on the right track, boasting a commanding 14-point lead at halftime, propelled by a sensational performance from sophomore quarterback John Mateer, who completed 11 consecutive passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. His standout efforts included two touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Kyle Williams, who amassed nine receptions for 181 yards and three total scores.
However, the tide turned after halftime. The Lobos (5-6) seized the momentum as New Mexico QB Devon Dampier tormented the Cougars’ defense, amassing 367 total yards, primarily through a ground game that saw him net 193 yards and three touchdowns. In stark contrast, Washington State’s offense struggled, managing only 61 yards in the third quarter and failing to score.
The game ignited in the fourth quarter, with New Mexico taking a 31-28 lead after a field goal. Though Mateer connected with Williams for a touchdown to reclaim the lead, the Cougars left too much time for Dampier. The Lobos orchestrated a 75-yard drive in just under three minutes, clinching victory with a final rushing touchdown.
After the game, Cougars coach Jake Dickert expressed profound disappointment, acknowledging the team’s inability to adapt in the second half. Despite their playoff hopes fading, Washington State looks to secure a bowl game in the season’s closing weeks.
