New Mexico Upsets No. 19 Washington State 38-35 in Thrilling Finish
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — In a stunning college football showdown, New Mexico delivered a thrilling 38-35 upset victory over No. 19 Washington State, marking the Lobos’ first win against a ranked opponent since 2003. Devon Dampier shone brightest, scoring the decisive touchdown on a 1-yard run with just 21 seconds left on the clock.
Dampier showcased his dual-threat capabilities, rushing for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries, and completing 11 of 25 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. His remarkable performance included 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a pivotal second-half surge.
The game switched momentum several times, notably as Washington State took a late lead on a 37-yard touchdown pass from John Mateer to Kyle Williams. Mateer finished the night impressively, going 25 of 36 for 375 yards and four touchdowns, while Williams racked up nine receptions for 181 yards and three scores.
Despite trailing 28-14 at halftime, New Mexico clawed back and went ahead 31-28 with a 21-yard field goal from Luke Drzewiecki late in the third quarter. Coach Bronco Mendenhall praised Dampier’s toughness and versatility, noting the importance of a physical running game in securing the win.
Washington State head coach Jake Dickert addressed his team’s mindset moving forward, acknowledging the critical need for resilience in the aftermath of the loss that likely ended their College Football Playoff aspirations.
New Mexico’s victory keeps their bowl eligibility hopes alive in Mendenhall’s debut season. The Lobos now look ahead to their matchup against Hawaii on November 30, while Washington State prepares to take on Oregon State next Saturday.
