Lawyer for woman claims she told House Ethics Committee about witnessing Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a minor

A woman testified before the House Ethics Committee that she saw Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general, engage in sexual activity with a minor at a house party in Orlando in 2017, according to her lawyer. Gaetz, a far-right Republican representative, has denied these allegations and resigned from Congress after being nominated for the attorney general position. The woman’s lawyer represents two witnesses who testified about Gaetz to the committee. Gaetz was investigated by the FBI on sex-trafficking allegations involving a 17-year-old but was not charged, and the House Ethics Committee also launched an investigation in 2021, which was reauthorized in 2023 after Gaetz’s resignation. There is uncertainty about what will happen with the committee’s report now that Gaetz is no longer in Congress. Some Republican senators want more information before a confirmation vote, while House Speaker Mike Johnson requested that the ethics panel not release the report since Gaetz is no longer in office. The committee was supposed to meet to discuss the report but that was called off. Gaetz is a former lawyer who was elected to Congress in 2016 and re-elected in 2018.
