Calm Before the Storm: Weather Changes Expected This Weekend
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — November 14, 2024 — Chief Meteorologist Joe Diaz urges residents to enjoy the pleasant fall weather as a significant weather change approaches this weekend.
Today’s weather featured comfortable temperatures, sunny skies, and light winds, with highs reaching around 55 degrees in Albuquerque. However, as the weekend progresses, an incoming storm system is expected to bring increasing rainfall, especially to southern and eastern parts of New Mexico, beginning Sunday afternoon. Meteorologists predict that as the storm hits, higher elevations might see heavy mountain snowfall, while lower elevations may experience rain mixed with snow.
As the system develops over the Pacific Northwest, it will start drawing moisture into the region, leading to a series of showers that could be significant, particularly on Sunday and Monday. Anticipated rainfall amounts could be as high as 1.25 inches in places like Roswell, which may induce rising levels in local creeks and streams.
Even as the state enjoys a dry Friday with mild temperatures, forecasters warn of a shift toward cooler, windy conditions. Wind gusts may exceed 40 miles per hour in areas like Gallup, which could lead to blowing dust.
Residents are advised to prepare for possible impacts on Monday, with colder temperatures and additional rain and snow expected. After a warm Saturday, where temperatures may reach the 70s in some areas, a return to chillier conditions will quickly follow.
