Aggies Triumph Over Islanders in Nail-Biter
Las Cruces, N.M. – NM State’s men’s basketball team recently secured a thrilling 83-82 victory against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Pan American Center on November 14, following a previous win against Utah Tech. This match marked the final home game for the Aggies until December 4, when Abilene Christian visits.
The Aggies launched the game with an aggressive 8-0 lead, thanks to early contributions from Carl Chernfant and three-point shots from Robert Carpenter and Christian Cook. Despite a slow start, the Islanders clawed back into contention with an 8-2 run, narrowing the Aggies’ lead to just one point before NM State responded with an 11-4 scoring surge.
The first half concluded with NM State in a commanding 16-point lead, bolstered by their efficient shooting (45%) against the Islanders’ struggles (27%). The Aggies showcased remarkable ball control, committing only two turnovers throughout the half.
The second half began with NM State extending its lead to as much as 21 points. However, the Islanders showed resilience, narrowing the gap to just six points in the closing moments of the game. A crucial dunk from Dionte Bostick in the final seconds helped solidify the Aggies’ narrow victory, despite the Islanders’ attempt to rally back with an and-one opportunity.
Five Aggies scored in double digits, with Bostick leading the charge with 13 points. Robert Carpenter recorded a double-double, marking a career high in rebounds with 10.
