President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former House member Doug Collins to lead the Department of Veteran Affairs in his administration. Collins, an Iraq war veteran and fierce defender of Trump during the 2019 impeachment inquiry, currently serves as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve Command. Trump highlighted Collins’ military background and commitment to veterans in announcing the nomination. Collins has pledged to provide top-notch care to veterans, streamline VA operations, root out corruption, and ensure every veteran receives their benefits. The 58-year-old Collins served in the House from 2012 to 2021 and was a prominent supporter of Trump during his first impeachment inquiry. Trump has previously considered Collins for other political positions, including potentially challenging Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in 2022. Collins has decided against running for governor or seeking a Senate seat in the upcoming midterms. The nomination of Collins for the role of leading the Department of Veteran Affairs will require Senate confirmation.
