New Mexico Man Sentenced to Life for the 2023 Murder of Alamogordo Police Officer

COPS Gala Commemorates the Resilience of Law Enforcement Families Amidst Tragedy

In a heartfelt gathering, the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Gala honored the families of fallen police officers, bringing together loved ones to share their grief journeys. Among the speakers, Andrea Arrington, sister of slain officer Scott Stewart, and Keith Dorwart, son of deceased officer Craig Dorwart, reflected on the profound impact of losing a family member in law enforcement.

The occasion comes in light of recent developments in New Mexico, where 27-year-old Dominic De La O received a life sentence without parole for the murder of Alamogordo police officer Anthony Ferguson. De La O was found guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree murder, after he fatally shot Officer Ferguson during a traffic stop gone awry in July 2023.

Officer Ferguson, a dedicated member of the Alamogordo Police Department for 11 years, succumbed to his injuries the day after the encounter, leaving behind two children and a grieving family. New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler expressed that while the sentencing provides some justice, it cannot replace the profound loss felt by Officer Ferguson’s loved ones.

De La O’s actions initiated a dramatic chase, culminating in his shooting of Officer Ferguson with a sawed-off shotgun after fleeing from police. His arrest followed a sustained effort by law enforcement, during which he sustained injuries himself.

The C.O.P.S. Gala serves as a vital platform for healing, reminding attendees of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the ongoing support needed for their families. As memories of fallen officers like Ferguson linger, the law enforcement community continues to unite in ensuring accountability for those who inflict harm and provide unwavering support for surviving families.
