Human Remains Found in Jal, New Mexico: Sheriff Addresses Concerns of Serial Killer
JAL, New Mexico — A shocking discovery of human remains, including multiple skull fragments, has linked the case to an individual named Cecil Villanueva, who was arrested for criminal trespassing. Lea County Sheriff Corey Helton clarified to local media that despite public speculation of a serial killer operating in the region, there is no evidence supporting this theory.
Sheriff Helton stated, “The misconception of a serial killer walking around is just not correct. We don’t believe it’s a serial killer,” emphasizing the current focus on piecing together the fragments with the assistance of a forensic anthropologist. Helton dismissed claims circulating on social media that Villanueva was found in possession of 10 to 20 intact skulls, clarifying that only fragments were discovered.
The investigation has expanded beyond Villanueva’s residence, as deputies found additional bone fragments at different locations. Helton indicated that the discovery was initiated by reports from investigators who responded to potential human remains. Amid growing public concern regarding links to other missing persons cases, including that of Angela McManes, who disappeared in 2019, Helton reiterated that the Lea County Sheriff’s Office is focusing primarily on McManes’ case.
While there have been discussions about several missing individuals in the area, Helton stated, “I can’t really say what the individual police departments have… but right now, our focus is on Miss McManes.” As this investigation continues, local authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Lea County Sheriff’s Office at 575-396-3611 or Lea County Crime Stoppers at 575-393-8005.
