Investigation Uncovers Human Skulls in Jal, New Mexico
JAL, N.M. — A disturbing discovery of human remains has emerged from an investigation initiated by the Lea County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) on November 5, following a report from a local resident. The resident relayed a concerning encounter with a person who had made alarming remarks after accepting a ride. Subsequently, it was found that the individual possessed two bags containing items that appeared to be human bones.
LCSO launched searches in the vicinity of the initial encounter, uncovering bone fragments that were later confirmed as human. On November 6, investigators executed a search warrant on a property on South Fourth Street associated with the individual in question, leading to the discovery of additional bone fragments, including a skull and a jawbone. A subsequent search on November 9, involving forensic anthropologists, revealed an alarming total of between 10 and 20 human skulls.
The investigation is reportedly linked to the unresolved 2019 case of Angela McManes, whose last known residence was in proximity to the property currently under investigation. At this stage, the individual associated with the remains, identified as Villanueva, has not been charged with any crime. Law enforcement is collaborating with forensic experts to ascertain whether the skulls were procured online, as Villanueva claims.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this case to reach out to LCSO at (575) 396-3611 or (575) 393-8005. The remains will be sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator for further testing and identification. The investigation underscores the ongoing efforts to resolve past missing persons cases and to seek justice for victims.
