Former basketball players involved in NMSU hazing scandal facing lengthy trial ahead

Three former New Mexico State University basketball players, Kim Aiken Jr., Deshawndre Washington, and Doctor Bradley, were in court for a status hearing related to a hazing scandal. The judge, Conrad Perea, ruled that the trial could be over a year away due to the complexity of the case, which involves lengthy reports and numerous interviews conducted by NMSU during their investigation.

The defense attorneys requested 455 days for the trial, citing the extensive discovery process. The prosecutor, John Duran, asked for 300 days, arguing that the state’s case would be driven by testimonial evidence rather than scientific evidence. The judge ultimately chose the longest time frame, Track 3, to allow for thorough preparation.

Aiken Jr. pleaded not guilty to the 11 felony charges against him, while Washington’s attorney requested permission for him to play professional basketball abroad. Judge Perea agreed to grant permission once Washington signs with a team. The trial is scheduled for 10 days, with the prosecution estimating it could take five days to present their case.

The defense attorneys emphasized the need for additional time to thoroughly investigate the case, ensuring that all angles are considered. They believe the extended timeline will allow for a fair and comprehensive trial. The next steps in the case will involve continued preparation and potentially additional witnesses coming forward.
