APD’s Police Academy Scandal Continues: Cadet Takes Leave for Making Violent Threats to Classmates

Albuquerque Police Academy Sergeant Charmine Carter filed a Temporary Restraining Order against cadet Devin Guidry on December 6th, citing multiple incidents involving Guidry’s behavior with his APD-issued firearm and non-lethal equipment. Court documents revealed that Guidry had made disturbing statements and gestures, including putting the barrel of his gun in his mouth and threatening other cadets during firearms training.
Guidry’s threats escalated to the point where he stated that he would return to the Academy and start shooting if he got fired. He also made unstable threats while working at the International Balloon Fiesta, admitting he joined APD to create chaos. An internal memo has been circulated to all APD staff to be on the lookout for Guidry on city property.
Guidry, who was involved in a fatal shooting in Portales in 2019, is currently on leave from APD, but a check of the city’s transparency site shows that he is still employed by the department. The 128th APD Police Academy cadet class, which Guidry is part of, is set to graduate after 26 weeks of instruction.
The situation with Cadet Guidry has raised concerns about safety and the screening process for cadets at the APD. The department is facing scrutiny for allowing someone with Guidry’s history to continue working as a cadet, despite the disturbing incidents outlined in the TRO.
