The high winds that hit New Mexico on Tuesday are finally dying down, with much colder air moving in overnight. Some areas will experience their first freeze of the season by Thursday morning. Wind gusts over 60 mph were reported in the Sacramento Mountains and Roswell, causing blowing dust along the I-10 corridor. A cold front moving across the state is helping to calm the winds. Wednesday will be cooler than average, with breezy conditions returning in the afternoon, but not as strong as on Tuesday.
A Freeze Warning is in effect for the Rio Grande Valley, while parts of eastern New Mexico are under a Freeze Watch, with temperatures possibly dropping to 31°. Temperatures will start to warm up on Thursday afternoon, but Halloween will still be cooler than usual. A warming trend is expected for Friday and Saturday, with breezy winds likely to return on Saturday afternoon.
Rain chances will increase in eastern New Mexico on Friday afternoon, with a better chance for showers and storms on Saturday as a storm system moves into the state. More widespread rain is expected early next week as another strong cold front brings cooler air on Monday. For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, visit KRQE NEWS 13.
