Two men have been convicted of robbing an off-duty Secret Service agent at gunpoint in Tustin, California, after the agent had finished working at a fundraiser attended by President Joe Biden. The robbery took place on June 15, and DNA evidence connected one of the men, Jamonte Fitzgerald Johnson, to the crime. Johnson pointed a gun at the agent, stole his belongings, and dropped the gun as he fled the scene. Johnson, described as a “third striker” with prior felony convictions, was found guilty of second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. He faces a maximum sentence of 35 years to life in state prison.
The second man involved, E’shon Dwayne Dodson, was also found guilty of second-degree robbery and being armed with a firearm during the robbery. He faces a maximum sentence of six years in state prison. During the robbery, the agent fired shots, injuring an accomplice, Bertran Claude Bell, who later pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery and was sentenced to six years in state prison.
The convictions demonstrate that crime does not pay in Orange County, according to Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. The swift and decisive justice system was praised for holding the perpetrators accountable for their actions. Both men are awaiting sentencing for their involvement in the robbery.
