Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old Indianapolis man, was convicted of six counts of murder, including the shooting deaths of five people, one of whom was a pregnant woman, in January 2021. The victims included his father, stepmother, and three siblings. The attack followed an argument over Childs staying out late. Childs methodically went from room to room, shooting the victims, but one sibling survived by fleeing the house. Childs was also convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license.
Childs’ first trial ended in a mistrial after a witness confronted him in front of the jury. His recent conviction came after a five-day trial where the jury deliberated for about three hours. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said the verdict provided justice for the victims. Childs’ sentencing is scheduled for January 7, where he faces a sentence of 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for the handgun charge.
Mears praised the dedication of the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses who worked to bring justice for the victims. The prosecutor described the crime as unfathomable and expressed sympathy for the family and friends of the victims. Childs’ attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
