Enhanced AI technology provides advanced mammograms to detect additional health concerns

Texas-based Solis Mammography is utilizing artificial intelligence to detect breast arterial calcification during mammograms. This new technology is being offered in partnership with Washington Radiology in the D.C. area, aiming to provide additional insight into potential heart disease risk. Breast arterial calcification is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, making it an important marker to watch for during screenings.

Dr. Brian Choi from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences explains that identifying breast arterial calcification can help predict vulnerability to heart disease, beyond traditional risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. While the screening tool offers valuable information, insurance coverage for this additional analysis is currently limited, with out-of-pocket costs at $119.

Solis Mammography’s chief medical officer, Chirag Parghi, emphasizes the importance of combining heart health information with mammograms, as mammography has proven to be a valuable screening tool for women. While the process of getting insurance coverage for breast arterial calcification analysis may take time, Parghi believes it is essential to provide as much insight as possible into diseases like heart disease.

Overall, this innovative approach to using AI in mammography screenings highlights the potential to improve detection and prediction of heart disease risk. By expanding the scope of information available through mammograms, patients can gain a more comprehensive understanding of their health and potentially take steps to prevent cardiovascular issues.
